Run 3-phase motors from a single-phase 220V supply

A variable frequency drive (VFD) that takes 220V single-phase input and delivers 380V three-phase output, sized from 1.5kW to 11kW. It is the standard solution for workshops, farms and home garages that own 3-phase machinery — a lathe, mill, compressor, pump or saw — but only have a single-phase supply at the wall.

What it does for you

  • No 3-phase connection required — avoids the cost and waiting time of a utility upgrade.
  • Speed control included — unlike a rotary converter, a VFD also varies motor speed, which is useful on lathes, mills and pumps.
  • Soft start — ramps the motor up instead of slamming it across the line, reducing mechanical shock and inrush current.
  • Seven power ratings — 1.5kW, 2.2kW, 4kW, 5.5kW, 7.5kW and 11kW options to match the motor nameplate.
  • Built-in protection — over-current, over-voltage, over-heat and overload cut-outs.

How to size it correctly

Match the drive to the motor nameplate kW, then go one size up if the load is hard-starting: compressors, pumps under head and anything with a heavy flywheel. A VFD sized exactly to the motor will trip on inrush with those loads.

Also check your incoming single-phase supply. An 11kW drive draws a substantial single-phase current, so the feeding circuit, breaker and cable must be rated for it — this is the most common reason an otherwise correct installation fails.

Frequently asked questions

Will this run any 3-phase motor?

It runs standard 380V three-phase induction motors within the rated power. It is not suitable for motors requiring a different voltage class, nor for equipment that needs a true sine-wave utility supply for its own control electronics.

What size do I need for my machine?

Read the kW rating on the motor plate and select that rating. For compressors, pumps and other hard-starting loads, choose the next size up.

Can I keep the machine's original control panel?

Often not directly. Contactors and control transformers fed from the motor terminals can misbehave on VFD output. Most installations wire the machine's start/stop to the drive's control terminals instead. An electrician should make this change.

Does it need a special breaker or cable?

Yes. Single-phase input current is roughly three times the equivalent three-phase current for the same power, so the supply cable and breaker must be sized accordingly.

Is it the same as a rotary phase converter?

No. A rotary converter generates a third leg mechanically at fixed frequency. A VFD synthesises all three phases electronically and lets you vary speed, which is usually the better choice for a single machine.

What warranty applies?

1 year against manufacturing defects, with email support for sizing and wiring questions.
